A Letter from a North Korean Defector / A Letter from the Artist
작가가 교육 봉사했던 북한이탈주민과 공동 작업한 편지 설치 작업이다. 같은 한반도에서 다른 이유로 미국에 이주하게 된 이탈 주민과 작가가 한반도에 있는 인물에게 편지를 작성했다. 작가는 편지를 요청할 때 이탈 주민에게 특정 인물, 이야기, 감정 또는 내용을 요구하지 않았다. 이탈 주민이 북에서 돌아가신 어머니께 편지를 쓴 것을 인지 한 후 작가는 남한에 거주 중인 본인 어머니께 편지를 작성했다. 이탈 주민의 신상 보호와 불필요하게 편지 내용이 유출되는 것을 방지하기 위해 이탈주민과 작가는 계약서를 함께 작성 및 체결했다. 그러한 이유로 작품에 참여한 이탈 주민의 신상, 편지 그리고 계약서를 비공개 한다. 이하 스캔 된 편지는 작가 본인이 남한의 어머니께 작성한 편지다. 두 참여자의 편지는 한글과 영어로 작성했으며 진실성을 위해 도움 없이 각자 번역 및 수기 작성했다. 전시 이후 이탈 주민의 편지는 어머니께 전달되지 못한채 작성자 본인에게 다시 전달되었으며 작가의 편지는 남한의 어머니께 보내졌다.
In creating this letter installation, I collaborated with a North Korean defector I volunteered to teach English. As we came to the United States from the Korean Peninsula for different reasons, the defector and I wrote a letter to the respective figures in the Peninsula. When I asked the defector to write the letter, I did not request to write to a particular figure, share a story, convey a feeling or content. After recognizing that the defector wrote the letter to her mother, who passed away in North Korea, I wrote a letter to my mother living in South Korea. To protect the defector’s personal information and the content of the letter, the defector and I wrote a contract together and signed it. For this reason, the participating defector’s personal information, letter, and the agreement are not open to the public. The scanned letters below are my letter to my mother in South Korea. Both participants wrote letters in both Korean and English. To maintain the defector and my integrity, each letter was translated and hand-written respectively, without anyone’s assistance. After the exhibit, the defector’s letter could not be delivered to her mother in North Korea but returned to the defector, and the artist’s letter was sent to his mother in South Korea.
